Costumes of the heroines of Shakespeare (part 2: Cross dressed)

If we were playing a game of Guess who and you said “Cross dressing” I would probably say “Shakespeare” He is known for the way he dresses his characters disguised as a person of another sex to bring in a flow or a twist in his play. I am not dwell further on the significance of cross dressing or its gender related issues. All that I am going to do is take two of his heroines who cross dressed as a man in their roles. In both the plays I chose the heroines dress up as non-noble men.One is Viola in Twelfth night disguised as Cesaro (a boy servant of Duke Orsino ‘s court) and Rosalind in As you like it disguised as Ganymede.Fashion, during the Elizabethan period was way different from what we see like I mentioned in my previous article. There were a lot of etiquettes on the way the men dressed. It was not just what they wore but the material they chose and the colour of the attire was at regulation too.

Usually a typical working class man of the 16th century wore a

Muffin caps or toques

Shirt made of rougher material

Breeches that were round and broad and the colours that they were allowed to wear included drab colours such as brown, beige and yellow

Viola ( Cesario) in Twelfth night

One of the well known plays of Shakespeare especially for the love triangle present in the play, the play had a number of movie and theatrical adaptations and the most prominent ones were the two movies of twelfth night that came out in the year 1998 and 2006

1998

The oldest version of the movie starring Francis Barber clearly is not a completely accepted of attire according to the usual rules in which they were supposed to dress up. Hey costume has royality and a touch of the working class tinge in it. This can be seen in the way in which Viola is seen as a resourceful person who could make good use of the little things she had. Similarly, inspite the little options she had to chose shr could expand her choices and wear something more perfect.

In the latest  version of the play in which Imogen Stubbs played the role of Viola, the attire probably caters to the same explanation as the earlier version for explaining Viola ‘s way of being resourceful. However let’s not forget that Viola as Cesario actually worked as a servant in a kingdom and the people who worked in the royal palace dressed in a particular way. Their costumes were usually a step ahead of the normal people yet not as good as royalty. This version of the costume has also got it’s own modern touch especially for the belt and and the white buttons that look right on place. Not to forget the way the court looks perfectly fitted on the character

Rosalind (Ganymede) in As you like it.

In this play in which Rosalind disguises as Ganymede to live in the Forest of Ardenne, she is seen as someone who is really smart and she is always seen as a character with more shades of perfection than the others in the play. Unlike Twelfth night, this play was not pretty well known. So there were like 3 movie adaptations and I will be looking only at the latest 2 adaptations.

If I had to show a picture to a class of people to give them an example of the way the working class people dressed in the Elizabethan era, this probably would be a picture I carry as my saviour. Starting from the muffin hat to the material that is chosen for the costume. Usually they wore cloths made out of wool and this attire is completely is made by wool. Above all the colour is definitely at its best choice for its mildness in it. The way her costume is perfectly matching with the way she is expected to dress as the person she is in disguise can be seen as the way her character is seen as someone who is perfect and has the capacity to anything with the answer to any question

In this version of the play in which Bryce Dalbas Howard played an exceptional role of Rosalind (Ganymede) the costume is similar to that of the old version with a greater modern influence. While the older version of the costume was more like a rug, this one is more nice. Despite following the proper colour code and choice of material, the attire still has its own touch of modernity especially for its openly fitted collar and perfectly stitched court that goes hand in hand with the way Rosalind is seen as a person who is well fitted in any place of the society that she is placed in. Adding on to it, her muffin cap gives in a more significant touch of a non-noble men.

A Winter’s nostalgia with Comme des Garcons

If someone told me dressing up isn’t all about the fun but just more than that, I wouldn’t argue with them. Would you? Starting from choosing what you want to wear, the print, the colour, the right accessories to the perfect pair of shoes or the bag you carry, nothing is easy to choose especially when a person has more choices. When it is all about what to wear, it would be a bit different to see a dress that makes you question for a moment, no definitely longer “How will anyone wear that?” Well that is what I exactly thought when I saw the Comme des Garcons ready to wear F/W17 Paris collection and I wasn’t surprised at all when most people I showed the pictures to reacted the same way.

IMG_20170608_171540IMG_20170608_171720IMG_20170608_171754IMG_20170608_171731IMG_20170608_171632IMG_20170608_171620
Those pictures not only left me confused or clueless but they left me thinking for nights, it raised so many questions in my head that I clearly wanted answers for. Firstly, How will anyone wear that? Secondly, who will pull the look perfectly and if anyone did how will they actually do it and more specifically where or what occasion will they wear it to? Besides all these questions that I may or may not get an answer for in the future, there is an underlined sense of warmth and memories that I could remember seeing the attire for a longer time. It clearly brought my mind the times my mom wrapped the quilt around me before I went to bed so that i stayed comfortable and warm enough. Ironically this is summer here when I write it, a time when people possibly bury their quilts in a store-room or inside the cupboard until it is winter again or it is cold. Especially considering the season now, it sure makes anyone who loves winter or the rain miss it more. The collection not only brings out nostalgic thoughts in our mind but it has also managed to create something unique and different. It defines a new statement in fashion clearly showing the way the fashion industry grows by day and night making new trends often. It also shows the confidence that designers have in them to create something specifically new, the idea of who might wear it has not held them back which in my opinion is an amazing thing. Lastly, in an industry like fashion where last week’s trend is different from today’s, having the courage to create something new and the ability to attract a huger scale of audience through one’s unique ideas is definitely an amazing thing.

The chains connecting Fashion and Environment

Over the long period of time it has always been a concern to many that our environment is safe, green and clean. Almost every science book having atleast one lesson on pollution, global warming, etc that has stirred an uneasiness in us that clearly makes us think what can we do to protect the earth or atleast what we shouldn’t be doing to cause the harm. Reading this possibly you may be thinking what does this have to with a fashion blog or why am I even reading about this in a blog that particularly is categorized as a fashion blog. In this blog post of mine I will be largely focusing on the various things that gained a name for itself in the fashion industry for the concerns it held in itself for avoiding any harm to the nature. From recycled jackets out of plastic bottles to bags out of your old shirts, today everything has been given a shot out of trial and error, finally getting what we want in our hands.
1. Trying your best not to throw away old cold clothes.
This is the least effective and the easiest way to go by. It is hardly any budget, if you are wise enough you will definitely be saving some bucks here or if the ball is in your court you can even mint some money out of it. Usually when any of our attires get a bit tight there are various things we may do or can do. While some of us may give it away to someone who would want it more badly, others may find a way to remove a few stitches with the hope that the garment may fit them again perfectly but what if you actually are planning to throw it away because you think no one can wear it again, why just make it one another piece of cloth for wiping the floor, utensils or kitchen stove. There are various things that can be done otherwise with it. It can be transformed to something better and useful. Today it has become a trend among many fashion youtubers to create something new out of waste garment and it is quite easy to do too following the instructions carefully. Bags being the easiest to make there are various other things that can be done. From using it to add ruffles to your other dress to making fringed scarves, it is all about the math and your creativity. While some ideas may sound surprising or something you have never thought, most of them are worth a try. Having the favour of exploring and choosing from the hundreds of options it is always good to take some time and decide on the best option. Buying a glue gun would be a perfect investment if you do not know how to stitch or you can learn to do it in no time. It is quite simple and easy. The reason I am stating this is that then your effort may be of waste if your result is not what you want,
Here are few ideas to choose fromIMG_20170421_201925http://www.jessicarebelo.com/recycled-denim-pouch-bag-diy/

2. Choosing between faux fur and real fur
Fur, for a very long time has always made a name for itself in the fashion industry. From your colourful accessories to your warm winter jackets, from your stylish beanies to your sophisticated boots everything today can be made more fashionable with the help of fur. These days it is not a very light thing to speak of when it comes to the effect fur or the controversies of choosing between real fur or faux one. Atleast not as light as it feels holding it in your hands.
To start with faux fur also known as pile fabric are polymeric fibers that are processes, dyed and cut to match the specific fur texture. It was first made sometime closer to 1929. Faux fur gained a large credit for itself in the runway occupying a big part in the fall collection 2016 with various designer brands like Gucci, Fendi, Armani and Dries Van Noten coming up with their faux fur collection namely the Pepto pink fox chubby,Haute Fourrure, no more animal and faux leather capes respectively. Faux fur especially became the best pick for animal lovers who believed strongly in not harming the animals. For instances Hannah Weiland, the founder of faux fur Shrimps quoted “My brand just started through the love of animals.” Various fashionistas like Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevingne became very fond of the faux fur also becoming the ones to be wearing it often.

Even though faux fur made a name for itself, it was obviously not everyone’s favourite. While some believed that real fur was more valuable , others believed that faux fur only didn’t harm animals, however it did had a lot of disadvantages that came with it. Especially when it came to manufacturing it or disposing it because it was made of non-biodegradable substances. The only way to reduce the effect it is or would is not to dispose it and make it a vintage piece. Designers who preferred real fur voiced against faux fur stating that there are safer and productive ways to make real fur. For instances Thomas Salamon (General Manager of Yves Salamon) talked about how nothing is real when it comes to faux fur and it was really ironic to eat animals and just call real fur cruelty to animals. Stella McCartney also came up with her Fur free Fur in AW15 collection in Paris where models walked down the runway with shaggy blankets that closely resembled fur.

With both real or faux fur having its own pros and contrasts it is wholly what we want to choose from. Either ways they both don’t actually look very different it all depends on what we want to feel and the choice we have to make. Even if you are totally going to avoid fur real or faux, it is always okay.

3. It already comes recycled to you
“No piece is a fashion statement of all time.” With this article particularly being based on environment and fashion it would be a waste to ignore the 3Rs that I don’t even have to name, define or explain it further because who hasn’t heard of them. Various designer brands have sought out a uniqueness by using either of the three. While some designers came up with products that can have two or more purposes, other designers usually got their primary sources from the waste. Some brands that became examples of recycled fashion are Tonle, Titania Inglis, Matt & Nat, Study NY, Carrie Parry and others. Even famous designers and well known brands are using the techniques too. Like adidas combined with Parley to create trainers from ocean waste. Nike made socks, shorts and jerseys from recycled plastic bottles. Jackets from recycled bottles are the most common ones. Emma Watson also caught many people’s attention with her recycled dress by Calvin Klein to the Meta gala

IMG_20170421_195824

It didn’t stop just with clothing, accessories became a part of the recycled fashion too with designers like Rosalie McMillian making jewellery out of recycled coffee grounds. With fashion trends constantly changing through time, nothing remains in the trend forever. No piece is a fashion statement of all time. This definitely results in a huge textile waste. The real answer that designers are trying to find today is the ability to create something that has a timeless trend or the capacity to manufacture a product that can adapt itself as time, trends and style changes. It may not be really that easy to come up with the perfect solution but recycling fashion to avoid waste is never a bad idea. It is indeed great.

G Dragon speaks Fashion

If one held me in a gunpoint and asked me what was the best thing about Kwon Ji Yong popularly known by his stage name G-Dragon, would I possibly say it is his rap, his hairstyle that changes probably even before the season changes or should I say surely his sense of fashion. I will always be in a dilemma. G-Dragon globally known for his strong and confident sense of fashion is definitely more than worth to write about for his on the point style. I can put my foot down and say that although there are other amazing people who dress up great like everyday is a fashion show, this man has a style that truly just belongs to him or in precise a wardrobe clearly customised only for him. In precise if someone won his entire closet in an auction, they would still not be able to pull the swag like he does that is because I believe fashion is not just about what you wear but more about how you wear it and how you carry yourself forward wearing it. He has a style that speaks for him. He is someone who is not afraid to explore and go deep when it comes to fashion. He can break stereotypes, he can break rules when it comes to his vogue but he still would be able to rock the world with his screaming sense of fashion. For him it is not just about shopping from his favourite brands like Saint Laurent, chanel, givenchy, En noir, Balmain, Christian Louboutin, etc but it is also about going a bit more deeper for his love and dedication for the world fashion. I ain’t exaggerating here, he actually makes personal connections with designers like Karl Lagerfeld.

img_20161201_224902

Being in the front row for every fashion show he could make it to in his busy schedule he actually is quite an inspiration and someone to look up to for his style. While searching for information I also stumbled upon his fashion line “peaceminusone”.

img_20161202_224046
Subjectively to me,it was a perfectly cool style which wasn’t to hippy or too classy but in the right proportions. He also models for sister’s fashion store “Rare market” and his all time style inspiration is his mom who has an eye for fashion. These are just a few things I found, I could just keep going on like a train that never stops. When it comes to kpop idols airport is like their style destination where they get to wear what they want, their favourite brand new vêtements that they shopped and I bet you this big bang star makes a bang into every list of best dressed airport fashion. I am not kidding here, you can look it up for yourselves. For the exquisite man he is, he also appeared in the cover of the vogue magazine a couple of times

img_20161202_224131

All that I am trying to say is Kwon Ji Yong not only speaks fashion but he speaks it loud enough that one cannot help themselves ignore his style. So what am I to say in the gun point?!

Costumes of the heroines of Shakespeare

Among all the heroines, the Shakespearean heroines are always something special and unique. Not only for their importance in his plays but how infectious they could be. One could even refer to them as the yardstick for comparing the other characters of all time. It is a known fact that William Shakespeare is one of the greatest playwrights who lived in the Elizabethan era. Long back fashion as a statement was way different from what we see today. It had a whole different meaning to it. In simple words, fashion has taken a whole new turn. During the Elizabethan era, fashion was simple and there were five fashion rules commonly followed by the elite women then.

  1. Long gowns that covered them till their foot
  2. Ruffled collar
  3. Puffed sleeves
  4. Thin waistline (usually a crochet is worn)
  5. Footwear wasn’t important because it wasn’t seen anyways

Here are 5 of Shakespeare’s heroines and their fashion sense as seen in film adaptations

  1. Juliet in Romeo and Juliet

When you  started reading this article, probably the first heroine who popped in your head was Juliet. For the perfect storyline that Romeo and Juliet is, there are three adaptations. The first came out in 1968, second by the year 1996 and later following it the latest one released on 2013

(1968)To start with it is clearly seen that this dashing red dress looks fantastic and it has got a partial Elizabethan touch to it for its long sleeves and length. This dress probably belongs to the second half of the era because dresses with just thin waistline were stopped being sewn. People started preferring something lose a parallel and also more comfortable. I feel that the choice of colours is a perfection here. Red is a colour that symbolises love, passion, courage, strength, determination and a lot. I guess if we don’t look too much in detail all these words would describe Juliet too. Definitely!  Well, the gold in her sleeves and neckline could actually define her social status because it is a colour that attributes to the elites mostly and it is no doubt that Juliet does belong to a high class.

(1996)Though the costume of the 1996 production does not have a complete Elizabethan look for its open neck and non-sleeves, the little wing attached to her dress actually gives a really strong and confident edge to it. The wing is more like a magical tool that elaborates her character and her royalty.

(2013)In the latest version, it is seen that the dress has clearly got its Elizabethan edge back for the nan look it has in today’s context. The dress truly has the good girl and the composed look of royalty. This delicately tailored piece has a perfect vintage look.

Lady Macbeth in Macbeth

Talk about the villain she is probably the first lady on the list. With her cunning and confident personality, she obviously is a highlight in the play. Personally, she is my favourite heroine among the rest. Macbeth is obviously a remarkable tragedy and it is clearly seen through the various productions of it but I have only chosen three adaptations.

(1971)Being one of the oldest adaptations it is clearly seen that the costume has least of its modern touch. I feel that that the colour chosen is perfect especially for keeping the shade within the dull palate is so much relatable to her character. At instances our subjective thoughts can never be decided as wrong if we can prove it, the objective reason behind it may completely differ and I am not going to ponder on that now. In my point of view, I feel that her sleeves silently reveal her character. As we see her sleeves start as a closed one from her shoulders and it loosens like a wing. This represents how initially she was only considerate about killing King Duncan so that Macbeth  would get the high ranking but after the murder, she does fall a victim of guilt. This shows how her closed mind is switched to a more open mind where she truly realises her mistake just like the sleeve that opened. The beautiful and thick golden tinged belt indicates royalty, her social ranking, her status, etc. In a few words, I would also state that the dull shade of the dress is her evil plan to kill the king and the belt indicates her cunning, cruel and witty mind for going about it.

(2015)In the recent adaptation of Macbeth in which  Marion Cotillard played the role of Lady Macbeth, the costume is quite chic and splendid. It is like the perfect cake with a proper proportion of modernity, royalty and yet an Elizabethan touch. This is obviously my favourite costume. The light beige is an absolutely amazing choice in terms of its dullness that mildly brings out her dark character. However, beige is actually considered as the colour that is neutral, calm and relaxing. Neither of the three-match along with her character. First of all, she went to an extreme to make sure that her husband would have the heights in the hierarchy, making her 0% neutral. In the later part when she fell a victim of guilt where do the calmness and relaxing attitude come from. She is actually completely nervous and guilty. However, the layered beads around the neckline is a mind-blowing touch to the dress making it perfectly suited and astounding to look at because I feel every single bead speaks for itself and adds life to the dress. Although I have a few words to tell about the attire, it is still the best because some things are best left a mystery or unsaid. All you need to do is look at the dress for two minutes and you will be delighted too.

Beatrice in Much ado about nothing

Beatrice is probably a character that is prevalent in every woman while we hear or talk about patriarchy. For her witty, smart and confident character, she is definitely considered as one of the strong and tough heroines of Shakespeare according to me.

(1993)

(2012)

White is the colour which some may argue is not even a colour has so much meaning to it because physics explains it to be the colour that reflects every colour and literature explains it as a colour of purity, peace, cleanliness, marriage and the list goes on. With the costumes of Beatrice I am going to be comparing the dresses from the two adaptations together because of the wild similarity between both the costume. Both of them are wearing a white dress that looks like they are covered with snow is beautifully designed in spite the lack of sophistication in the dress. It is simple and elegant. Although over here the irony is that both of them are wearing white the colour of marriage and Beatrice is a character who initially doesn’t believe in marriage. However if one sees both the costumes as an attire in the context of the Elizabethan era then this dress scores a 3 out of 5. Firstly it flows down till the floor, tight around the waist and relatively loosened sleeve for Emma Thompson and for Amy Acker it is satisfyingly fitting the Elizabethan type except for the length which is especially lending to the  modern touch in the costume

A walk into the colourful paradise(my first experience)

I have always seen those invites come home but never was I in luck because I either saw the card too late or there would be something else planned already so alas! I never went but this time,  everything was in line, both my schedule and my excitement. Checked my dates thrice to assure that i cancel anything else that comes on the day giving my first fashion expo visit an extra priority because it was going to be an unforgettable experience, especially when you are new blogger and you decide to work more with primary resource than the secondary ones you have been working with like TV shows, etc. On the 16th of July, I wore my favourite white lace t-shirt, black jeans and I accessorized it with my little crystal bracelet, a pearl ring and a dash of my happiness because I wanted the day to be completely perfect like I said “unforgettable”. The event “Hi-life exhibition” took place in Hyatt Regency Chennai. Strung together by many Indian designers with the theme “wedding”  in the minds of all the designers was a beautiful collection brought into the eye of every visitor. OK, now when I mention eye it means just to see because all the attire on display were super costly and of course there were a lot more than attire. you know like lanterns, brochettes, scarves, bags, clutches. jewelry, etc and the list goes on.  Walking into the expo so much reminded me of the Coldplay “Hymn for the weekend” It is one similarity that one could grasp faster. Not only for the colourfulness that one could find both in the video and the exhibition but also remember how one might have discussed the stereotyping in the video, well it was an issue slightly prominent in the event too because there were designers from various parts of the country like  Mumbai. Chhattisgarh, Goa, Delhi, etc but not one designer belonging to Chennai on display, not a piece of “Saamuthrika Pattu”. At least the music video had some Bharthanaatiyam in it. Except for these, it was wholly an amazing event and if you are ready to shed more money then you have got all your shopping done within a roof for yours or any wedding that you are going to attend. You would, of course, look perfectly good, elegant and pretty.  If not to have them forever unless brought, it was, of course, a colourful paradise and a happy treat to the eyes.

Here is a  picture of the invites that I stored as a memory

A Thumbprint that would make an impression

We all know that necessity is the mother of invention and to prove it right Fariha Shameel is a living example. Waiting to do her postgraduate degree she recalls that she always felt lost and she wanted to do something that involved her full interest and passion, that is when luck stroke her in finding the greatness of art in a painting class. She was crazy about bags and she always co-ordinate her handbags according to her clothes and she had bags picked out for every occasion. According to her, she felt that bags are actually the weapon of a woman’s fashion and the most perfect bags are the ones that go along with your attire and yet describe your personality. These two things that she expected from a bag always made her disappointed because she felt most bags didn’t satisfy both of her needs at the same time but only either of them. In the hope to carry the most perfect bag she joined a fashion designing course through which she self-earnt the art of making handbags in the year 2009 and  she put her hands down on making…actually…sewing it herself which might come as a surprise to most of us at the beginning and that is when she became an entrepreneur where she sold the bags she makes in her social media pages called the “ThumbPrint”   She says that it actually takes her a long time to make her bags because she has to have her customer and their needs in her mind and deliver something that the customer actually expects. This growing designer takes full interest and pleasure in making bags that reflect her character through her choice of fabric, taste and colour. Asked if it is a profession or passion, she replied “Profession or passion still figuring that as I love to make bags! It is an art and each bag speaks to me. I take time in making my bags and I can’t mass produce because I make every bag with care by keeping my clients in my mind” and in response to the first bag that she made and the latest one she responded “Being my own critic, my first bag was not the one I expected so I didn’t finish but I still have it as a motivation and  looking at my recent bag which was a diaper bag that I made for a friend I see that I have come a long way”  In the interview she also added “I was always bad at art from childhood but that one year really changed my life.”

Attractive nails

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and you end up becoming completely awestruck or you just admiring how beautifully they have done their fingers?? Long gone are the  times when bright red shades and a single ring worn on the ring finger. It is now time for you to flaunt with dashing shades like yellow, flurosent shades, orange, teal, white or black. Usually these bright shades gives a bold and confident look to your nails. There are various things that one could do with their nails like you can try using shades for each fingers or alternative fingers, then you can go for the gradient style by choosing two perfect colours that go along well, you could also try using a different colour for the tip of your nails especially the colour white would be a perfect choice because it is an ubiquitous shade or a friendly colour as it goes with every other colour. This style would give your fingers a pretty and elegant look. If there is a special occasion or you are so excited about doing your nails then all you do is to buy fake nails if yoy wish to. Lately there is this new thing called the proclaim nails with which one could do their nails easily, by simply following the procedure behind the box. Remember any nail art or nail works is  beautifully elevated especially  when your nails  are trimmed and filed perfectly. Even if you just try the simple transparent shade with a perfectly trimmed and filed nails, it is still more attractive. Now talking about rings, it is time you wear all the rings in your box on the same day, this may initially look clumsy or uncomfortable because you are used to single rings but as time goes you would have a stylish vibe in you. In F.R.I.E.N.D.S Phoebe Buffay wears these multiple rings and it looks gorgeous. No matter how much we style our fingers some of us have really dark knuckles sometimes or mostly it adds to be a back pull for all the hard work you went through. You could simple use home ingredients like orange peel, lemon extract, milk, baking soda or vinegar to slowly get rid of theses darkness on the knuckles. Try giving your nails a holiday once a week atleast by not doing anything on them. This would help the pores or the nails to get in contact with fresh air and it keeps your nails healthy and try keeping your nails moistured with either your body lotion or your nail creams. In case you didn’t know, you could mix nail polish remover to your nail polish when it dries so that you need not throw it out.

Rachel Green

Have you ever wished to be a waitress of the 90s? Well, I did when I saw my favourite sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. In the series Jenn plays the role of Rachel green(now who doesn’t know!) Her dressing sense as a waitress impressed me a lot, those cute aprons wow!  Although she was a terrible waitress her attire always got the attention of the screen. Actually it was this fictional character that desperately made me wish that I was in the fashion line. Let it be those cute waitressing costume or those she wore after joining Bloomingdale’s, everything is wow. Personally my favourites would be a knee length blue jean jumpsuit with a white sleeveless shirt or the white full handed U.S.A t-shirt with black short skirt and stockings, actually I can keep listing it here. Guys I know the 90s have long gone but don’t you all think that the fashion of the 90s is getting a comeback. Today tube sleeved summer dress with a plain shaded  t-shirt is a simple and lovely style .This doesn’t mean that fashion is not innovative or there isn’t any new surprise coming up in the line of fashion but it simply means that through these various comebacks and new creations by designers one has got more choices to make for their wardrobe today. In a few words Jenn has a cute yet sexy look in the comedy sitcom and definitely there is nothing to be surprised of with it because it is once in a blue moon that anyone would doubt her attire and in my case I never!
